Broncos Take St. Brown and Mayfield in Second Round

Baker Mayfield looks to be the Broncos new quarterback of the future.

Broncos draft WR St. Brown and QB Mayfield
The Broncos drafted Norte Dame WR Equanimeous St. Brown and Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield in the second round of the 2018 draft.

St. Brown is considered by several NFL scouts to be the best wideout in the draft, based upon his top-line speed, pro-level body control, and premier route-running. His stock fell due to limited exposure due to poor and inconsistent play by Norte Dame quarterbacks. The Broncos have a first round, top ten even, talent here early in the second round.

The headline pick is Heisman-winner Baker Mayfield out of Oklahoma. He's a gunslinger with a great football mentality and the leadership aspects you want in a quarterback. He does not have elite arm strength but has solid touch and good accuracy. He'll compete against Tyrod Taylor immediately for the starting role in 2018.

    Broncos Training Camp Position Battles

Tyrod Taylor will be battling against Heisman winner Baker Mayfield.

    Broncos Position Battles

Starting Quarterback: Tyrod Taylor vs. Baker Mayfield (vs. Paxton Lynch)
Chad Kelly is missing from this battle as he decided to sign with the Chicago Bears during minicamps. The Broncos have completely re-arranged the quarterback room for Mike Sullivan, Bill Musgrave, and OC Alex Van Pelt. Trevor Siemian and Brock Osweiler were cast off (Siemian landing in New York, Osweiler in Pittsburgh) and it seems that might be the fate of the underwhelming first-round pick Paxton Lynch. Free agent signing and rookie second-rounder Baker Mayfield will go head-to-head all training camp and preseason. Taylor finished the season just under 2800 yards with 14 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. Mayfield's last season at Oklahoma threw over 4600 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. The Broncos have worked out QBs Ryan Mallett and Zach Mettenberger, in search of a guy for that third-string role. It is expected that Lynch will be moved before the preseason is up unless his play is beyond expectations.

Wide Receiver Depth: Adam Humphries vs. Equanimeous St. Brown vs. Tavon Austin vs. Carlos Henderson
The Broncos traded away Demaryius Thomas to clear cap and move an inconsistent deep threat. To replace the productivity, they signed possession receiver Adam Humphries and speedster Tavon Austin. With their first pick in the second round, they took an unbelievable athlete in Equanimeous St. Brown out of Norte Dame. Carlos Henderson is hoping to see an expanded role next to Emmanuel Sanders in his second season as well.

Offensive Line Depth: Menelik Watson vs. Nico Falah vs. Connor McGovern vs. Max Garcia vs. Donald Stephenson
The offensive line was an absolute struggle all season. The Broncos have brought in Sean Kugler from UTEP to hopefully help remedy the problem. Garrett Bolles will hopefully have a profound effect back from injury, and Jeromy Irvin is anticipated to hold down the other side. The rest of the line will hopefully fall into shape as the team continues to explore other options.

Starting Cornerback: Bradley Roby vs. Pierre Desir
Former Colt Pierre Desir has impressed defensive coordinator Joe Woods so far, so much so that he has a major chance to be the outside corner opposite Chris Harris, Jr. The Broncos released starting corner Aqib Talib in the offseason to clear cap, and in turn signed Roby to an extension in hopes that he would work the outside. So far, he has been so-so while Desir excelled. Keep an eye on this one.

Dante Pettis should be an interesting rookie pickup.
