    Coach McCoy's Notes
    ‣ #2 S Alex Rankin figures to be a day-one starter at Rover. He's a strong kid and can run and expect him to be one of our best players off the jump.
    ‣ #65 S Corey Willis will make the adjustment to linebacker as he lacks the speed (79 speed) that I want at safety.
    ‣ #121 CB Cortez Hughes is going to likely start at free safety, too bad that he's coming in as a junior or he could be a stud.
    ‣ #63 OLB Mike Gates is going to play defensive end for us and join a talented group of freshman defensive linemen.

    Defensive Line
    ‣ Projected Starters: DE: Ricky Hunter (RS Jr) and Martin Ifedi (RS Sr); DT: Terry Redden (Sr) and Chase Rome (Sr)

This group was a strength a year ago and figures to be the same this season with Hunter being the returning all-american. Rome and Redden are excellent pass rushers for their size while Ifedi is probably our best defender against the run. The depth at the position is better with Joey Jefferson coming in as a JUCO transfer and Mike Gates being used as an edge rusher. Expect this defensive line to be the strength of this defense.

    Linebackers
    ‣ Projected Starters: Charles Harris (Sr.) and Ryan Coleman (Sr.)

Losing Brown, who started last season, will be tough but Coleman figures to be the new leader of this two-man crew with Harris slowly but surely getting comfortable. Harris is very similar to Brown because he can run but he needs to play more downhill. Should there be an injury to either one, very confident in Jackson Dillon's ability to step in and replace either of them.

    Cornerbacks
    ‣ Projected Starters: Andrew Gaines (RS Sr) and Bobby McCain (Sr)

Thought about moving Gaines to free safety as he struggled at times last season at corner but thought better of it. We return the same duo at corner and expect them to take another step and be more reliable when it comes to covering down the field and being more comfortable in cover 3 looks where they're asked to play a guy 20-yard down the field on an island.

    Safeties
    ‣ Projected Starters: WS: Reggis Ball (RS Jr); R Alex Rankin (Fr); FS Cortez Hughes (Jr)

Replacing all-american Watson will be hard but there's a chance that Rankin is better than Watson this season. He's bigger, faster and more physical. Can't wait to see this kid play, especially against UCLA and Ole Miss. Ball returns as the weak safety across from Rankin with Hughes, a JUCO transfer that came in as a corner, handles that deep, free safety position. Depth is extremely thin, can't afford an injury, especially to Rankin or Hughes.

    Coaches Notes
    ‣ Can't take anything from this game, just need to get past it.
    ‣ Rankin impressed, Hughes did not.
    ‣ Wasn't a big fan of UCLA keeping their starters in as long as they did. I'll remember that.

Not the start you wanted to the season. Assaulted by UCLA wasn't cute either.

I don't like this, I don't like this at all.

    8 wins is still possible.

    Coaches Notes
    ‣ Rankin might need to play closer to LOS, made plays when asked to play in the flats or in run support.
    ‣ Got 6 sacks on the QB and even more pressure, our defense starts up front.

There we go. Rankin played pretty well. Pick six was fairly clutch.
