Alright, so I've kind of allowed this to morph into a Northwestern chise more than the Darrenn Pawlikowski story. I'll be making some changes to refocus things going forward. Any comments, questions or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for following.

"Babe!" She shouted, awaking Darrenn with a start.

He picked his head up and looked around, taking in his surroundings.

    "We're here right?"

    "Yeah." He nodded. "We're here."

"Is it safe here?" She asked with a hint of nervousness in her voice.

"Yeah it's fine. He replied as he got out of the car.

He opened her door and they walked toward the building, his arm around her shoulders holding her close.

They walked up the stairs and after looking for a few seconds he pressed one of the buttons and waited.

    "Mom! It's Darrenn!"

    "Darrenn?! I wasn't expecting this!"

    "Buzz us up!"

"Oh the damn buzzer is broken again. I'll be down in a minute."

    Darrenn shook his head.

"Things always broken." He said to no one in particular.

"This place is kind of sketchy." Kendra said with a wrinkled nose.

"Yeah, I guess it is." Darrenn answered as he looked around.

"Hello, hello! Oh Kendra!" Darrenn's mother all but shouted as she opened the door.

"Come in, come in!" She said as she waved them through the door.

Hugs were exchanged then the trio headed up the stairs to the fourth floor.

After spending some time making small talk and catching up Darrenn realized how cold it was in the apartment.

"Mom why don't you turn the heat up?"

"Oh I like it like this. It's comfortable."

He noticed that she was wearing a heavy sweater.

Later, when he went to get a drink from the refrigerator he noticed how bare it was inside.

"Mom, where's your car?" He asked after staring out the window for a while.

"Down at the shop. Something with the carburetor I guess. Should be done next week."

Kendra and Darrenn were halfway home when she finally spoke up.

"Darrenn?" She asked. "Doesn't your mom have a Camry?"

    "Yeah. Why?"

    "How old is it?"

"I'm not sure. Maybe like eight or nine years? Why do you ask?"

"I think her mechanic is screwing her. There is no carburetor on that car."

"Nah, she's been going to Bobby's place for like 20 years."

"Either he's screwing her over or she got confused."

"I'll call Bobby when we get back and see what's up for her."

    "Ok. Good idea."

"Hey Bobby, it's Darrenn Pawlikowski. How's it going man?"

    "Darrenn! What's going on man?"

    "Oh the usual man. You?"

"You know. Hey hell of a season. How's the thumb?"

"Yeah thanks man. Thumbs getting better. Almost there."

"Good man. Good. What you need man?"

    "You got mom's car there?"

"Nope. Haven't seen her in a year probably. How is she?"

"She's doing alright man. Thought she said she was having car troubles but maybe not. I'll hit you back if so."

    "Alright brother. Take care."
