Hilltoppers top the Sun Belt defensive team
Bobby Petrino is a renowned offensive coach, perhaps one of the best in all of College Football, but that's not the only thing that Sun Belt opponents have to fear this season.

The Hilltoppers' defense is definitely one to be feared. Seven of the eleven starters on defense for the Hilltoppers will be playing their final season in Bowling Green, and they have high expectations. Of the seven players named to the Sun Belt All-American Preseason Team from WKU, five are on defense. LE Calvin Washington, LOLB Xavius Boyd, MLB Andrew Jackson, CB Tyree Robinson, and FS Jonathan Downling were all named to the first team this fall. RE Gavin Rocker was WKU's lone player on the 2nd team.

"It's great to have such a great defensive unit." says WKU's new head coach Bobby Petrino, "It makes it way easier to outscore your opponents when your defense is making plays that take the momentum and the other team out of the game. I think our defense will be a major key in our success this year."

WKU's defensive captain Xavius Boyd represented the defense at WKU's media day, "Right now, we play like we're the best defense in the conference." says Boyd, "Most of us came on campus together, we've always made it our goal to have a elite defense. My goal for us is to prove to be one of the best defenses in the whole country."

"Just because they've been honored doesn't mean that they are done improving," says Petrino, "The defense still has a lot of work to do, as well as room to grow."

WKU tied with Arkansas State for having the most players be selected for the All-Sun Belt team.

    Kentucky Preview

HB Antonio Andrews is expected to be the player to watch in this highly anticipated rematch

Kentucky hopes for payback against WKU in 2012 rematch
Last year, the Hilltoppers shocked Kentucky in Lexington when they beat them on a two point conversation in overtime. Kentucky would lose the following six games.

Western Kentucky's season opener is already one of their biggest games this season. Kentucky is most likely one of their toughest opponents on their weak schedule. Kentucky comes to Bowling Green with a new coach. Mark Stoops, Joker Phillips' replacement at head coach, will want to start his turn around of a program that is again showing promise for the newest turnaround team in college football with not only a win, but a payback win.

Despite Western Kentucky touting an all-new coaching staff, not much has changed from last season. CB Jonathan Dowling picked off Kentucky's Maxwell Smith three times, a season-high for Dowling. "I'd like to have another game like that." says redshirt sophomore Dowling, "I know they'll prepare for me this year. My game haunted (Smith) last year."

Dowling wasn't the only Hilltopper to have a good game last season, HB Antonio Andrews ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns. "We have to contain (Andrews)" says Kentucky's head coach Mark Stoops, "He's who we've prepared for, I think he's who all the other teams they play will prepare for. If you don't contain him, you're not gonna win."

WKU's season opener will be Bobby Petrino's first game he's coached since 2011 in Arkansas. "I'm ready to put the past behind me." says Petrino, "I'm grateful for this second chance."

There has been plenty of smack talk between players of the two teams, Kentucky's HB Ray-Ray Sanders III told the Lexington Press that his team has not forgot the way that WKU celebrated last season in Lexington. "You can't just come in somebody's house, do that, and get away with it." says Sanders, "We didn't take it lightly." Western Kentucky's LB Andrew Jackson jawed back to Bowling Green's media, "It's going to be worse than last year. They may have a new offense, we're just going to hit them harder this year." Jackson is on the minds of several Kentucky players, who said after last year's victory, "I thought they were a SEC team."

Neither Mark Stoops or Bobby Petrino have made any comments about their players actions.
