    2010 - Game 5: #14 Penn State

Late Stanzi to Sandeman Bomb Pushes Hawks Past Penn State

Iowa City - A back and forth game between 2 Big10 heavyweights that featured 3 ties and 5 lead changes wasn't decided until Ricky Stanzi hooked up with Colin Sandeman on a 78 scoring strike with 2:28 to play. After trailing 17-10 at the half, Stanzi found Brandon Wegher out of the backfield on a 6-yard TD pass, and Wegher added a 1-yard TD plunge to give the Hawks a 24-17 lead with 4:40 to play. Penn State QB Jordan Frank broke free and scrambled 72 yards to tie the game at 24-24 with just over 3:30 remaining. That set the stage for Stanzi and Sandeman's heroics. On the day, Stanzi completed 17 of 34 for 276 yards and 2 TDs. Wegher led the Hawkeye rushing attack 117 yards and 2 TDs on 22 carries. Sandeman led all receivers with 129 yards on 4 catches. Broderick Binns led the Iowa defense with an 8 tackle effort. Tyler Sash and Jeremiha Hunter each had 6 stops.

Iowa will have a BYE next week before traveling to Ann Arbor Michigan for a game against the Wolverines in the Big House. Thanks for following!

    2010 - Game 6: Michigan

    Hawks Sneak by Michigan, 27 - 24

Ann Arbor - Brandon Wegher carried the ball 25 times, and helped carry the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 3-point win over Michigan in the Big House. Wegher finished the day with 127 yards and 2 TDs to pace an otherwise stagnant Hawkeye offense. Ricky Stanzi had an off day only completing 18 of 30 passes for 164 yards with an interception. Iowa's other TD came on a Paul Chaney, Jr punt return of 48 yards in the 3rd quarter. Daniel Murray's 21 yard FG broke a 21-21 tie early in the 4th quarter and Iowa's defense made the margin hold up against the previously 5-1 Wolverines. The defensive effort was lead by Jeff Tarpinian's 8 tackles.

    2010 - Game 7: #5 Wisconsin

Sandeman Late Game Hero Again, Hawks Down Badgers 21 - 14

Iowa City - For the second time this season, Colin Sandeman proved to the right guy in the right place at the right time for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Locked in a 14-14 dual with rival Wisconsin, Sandeman was on the receiving end of a 40 yard scoring strike that proved to be the difference over the previously undefeated Badgers. Ricky Stanzi found FB Brett Morse on a 65 yards TD pass and Brandon Wegher chipped in a short 3-yard rushing TD for the other Hawkeye points. Sandeman's game winner was actually delivered by backup QB James Vandenberg. Vandenberg entered the game after Stanzi was taken to the lockerroom with an undisclosed injury. The redshirt sophomore completed 9 of for 147 yards in the victory. Stanzi was 6 of 11 for 107 before the injury. Wegher totally 72 yards on 18 carries while Sandeman led all receivers with 91 yards on 4 catches. The linebacking trio of Jeremiha Hunter, Jeff Tarpinian and Tyler Nielsen recorded 14, 13 and 11 stops, respectively.

The Hawkeyes used a Stanzi to Marvin McNutt TD pass and a scoring run by Brandon Wegher to build a 14-7 halftime lead before blowing the game wide open with 17 unanswered 3rd quarter points. Stanzi, showing no side effects of the injury sustained against Wisconsin, completed 21 of 34 for 229 and 3 TDs. The senior also threw an uncharacteristic 2 INTs on the day. 2010 - Game 9: Indiana

Strong 2nd Half Pushes Hawks Past Pesky Hoosiers, 41-20

Bloomington - The 5-3 Indiana Hoosiers didn't seem to care too much about Iowa's #2 national ranking as they jumped to leads of 7-0, 10-7 and a halftime lead of 13-10. Iowa came out strong in the second half, flexed its muscle and ran off 31 straight points to put any thoughts of an upset to rest. Ricky Stanzi continued his solid play under center completing 19 of 30 passes for 318 yards and 3 scores. Marvin McNutt was the primary target and grabbed 6 balls for 101 yards. Tight end Allen Reisner caught 2 TDs. Brandon Wegher had 2 TDs and 126 yards rushing on 19 carries. Broderick Binns had 5 stops while Karl Klug had 4 stops and a sack. Evanston - National polls named the Iowa Hawkeyes the #1 team in college football earlier this week, and the undefeated Hawks looked the part today in a 62-3 win over the Northwestern Wildcats. The host Wildcats actually got on the board first and held a 3-0 lead before the floodgates opened on the Hawkeye offense. Ricky Stanzi was 15 of 20 for 312 yards and 4 TDs. Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher combined for 171 yards rushing on 29 carries. Each found the end zone twice. Colin Sandeman had 5 catches for 140 yards and 2 TDs. Allen Reisner had 2 catches for 115 yards and a score. Christian Kirksey had 7 tackles and a sack and Shaun Prater returned an interception for a TD in the blowout victory.

    2010 - Game 11: #8 Ohio State

Buckeyes Upset Hawks...OSU Takes Big10 Lead

Iowa City - Ohio State forced 3 Hawkeye turnovers and got a timely 4th quarter interception return for a TD to upend Iowa today, 24-21. In a game that will undoubtedly shape the Big Ten and National Championship landscape, the host Hawkeyes came up short for the first time all season. OSU scored first to take a 7-0 lead, but Iowa answered with a Brandon Wegher TD run to knot the score. OSU kicked a pair of FGs to take a 13-7 lead at halftime, only to have Iowa answer with another Wegher TD and take a 14-13 lead into the 4th. OSU got a 25 yard interception return midway through the final period and tacked on a short TD run with a little under 2:00 to play. Trailing 25-14, Iowa got a desperation 81-yard TD heave from James Vandenberg to Marvin McNutt with 00:27 to play and a 2-pt conversion...but it was too little too late.

Wegher paced the Iowa offense with 2 TDs and 83 yards on 16 carries. Daniel Murray actually missed a FG attempt at some point in the game, but I don't have any idea when it occurred. Also don't have any idea why Vandy was in the game late instead of Stanzi, but Stanzi was only 8 of 18 for 149 and 2 INTs when he was in there. Jeremiha Hunter and James Morris led the Hawkeye defense with 8 and 7 stops. Morris was filling in for middle linebacker Jeff Tarpinian who missed the game after breaking team rules and being suspended for the remainder of the regular season (2 games).

The loss, Iowa's first, drops the Hawks into a tie with OSU for the Big10 lead. OSU holds the head to head tie breaker however and would have to lose to rival Michigan in order for the Hawks to have a shot at the conference title. Iowa will wrap up its regular season next week when it hosts Minnesota in the annual Battle for Floyd of Rosedale. Thanks for following!

    2010 - Game 12: Minnesota

    Hawks Bury Gophers, 36-10

Iowa City - Iowa rebounded from last week's loss to Ohio State with a 36-10 win over rival Minnesota. The win caps an 11-1 regular season for the Hawks, who fell to #6 in the national rankings and will finish as the Big10 runner-up. Ricky Stanzi threw for 285 yards and 2 TDs on 24 of 46 passing. His main target was Marvin McNutt who led all receivers with 139 yards and a TD on 8 catches. Brandon Wegher continued to pace the Hawkeye rushing attack with 138 yards and a TD on 23 carries. Jeremiha Hunter and Shaun Prater led a balanced defensive attack with 4 tackles each. Prater also added an interception while Karl Klug recorded a safety.

Iowa will await the results of Conference Championship week to see which bowl they are selected to play in. Ohio State, despite 2 losses, finds itself in the National Title picture. If that were the case, Iowa would be in a great position to garner an At Large berth in a BCS Bowl. Thanks to everyone that is following along.
