    BZZZZT. BZZZZT. BZZZZT.

    BZZZZT. BZZZZT. BZZZZT.

    BZZZZT. BZZZZT. BZZZZT.

I reached for my phone, barely awake. I knocked it off the end table and felt around for it on the floor. By the time I had it in my hands I'd missed the call. I looked at the screen but it was a blur.

    BZZZZT. BZZZZT. BZZZZT.

    "Hello?" I mumbled.

"Danny! What's up bro?" The hair on the back of my neck stood up at the sound of the voice.

"I was sleeping." I replied, somewhat annoyed.

"My bad. Had to call you about this deal as soon as I could."

"I don't want to hear about it. I told you I can't be into that shit anymore man."

"I know, I know. This is such a lock though man. Easy money."

"Hold on." I said as I got up and walked into the other room.

It was the perfect tackle. Just like they showed him back so many years ago. Wrap and drive through. They both spilled to the ground with a thud. Kellen got back to his feet and straightened out his uniform. He replayed the hit in his mind for a few seconds, reflecting back to some of the others he'd made in the past. He reached to his right shoulder and grabbed his radio.

"Suspect is in custody. Repeat. Suspect is in custody."

He finished cuffing the suspect and lifted him to his feet. Just as he did his partner rolled up in their patrol car.

"Nice work Clark." Kellen's partner Nick Elwell said as he put the suspect in the back of the car.

"Just like old times." Kellen replied.

"This is a big one for us. If we can get this guy to flip on 'em we could take down the whole group of them. That's big."

"Yeah. Let's hope so." Kellen replied, thinking about what a big bust could do for his career.

Maybe get me off these streets finally. He thought to himself.

"Let's roll." Elwell said, tapping the roof of the patrol car.

Kellen walked around and climbed in the passenger's seat.

"Make sure you think this through kid." Kellen said to the suspect, Omar Biggums. Kellen truly wanted to help Omar. He knew his story. No father figure around and a mother into drugs and prostitution. Omar was wound up with the wrong people by the time he turned ten. Now 19 Omar was running out of chances with the law.

"You know we've got you by the balls Omar. Help us out. Don't let this be the thing that defines you. Help us out and we can help you out. You're still young enough so you can still be somebody. You help us and we can help you. Probation. No jail time. You don't help us and you go down for the whole deal. Don't let that happen Omar."

Omar stared at Kellen, or rather through Kellen.

This motherfucker tryin' to act like my friend. I ain't no bitch. Omar thought to himself. He considered his options. Keep quiet and do time, real time this time, or give up some names and walk away. Not just walk away from jail though. Walk away from the game. Probably walk away from Houston too. Yeah, he'd have to leave or he would be looking over his shoulder 24-7.

"I ain't got nothing to say to you." He said, looking back to the floor.

    ---

"Look, he hasn't asked for a lawyer. We know he doesn't want to go to jail. He's got bitch written all over him. He'll talk if we give him time."

    "What do you think Kellen?"

"Yeah. I think he'll roll over. We just need to show him we aren't playing anymore."

    "Any suggestions?"

"Let's start prepping him for transport."

    --

"Wait! Hold up yo." Omar pleaded with Kellen.

    "Too late Omar. Too late."

"I'll tell you. I'll give you all of em!"

    "Start talking and we'll see."

"Naw man you gotta get me out!"

"I need something before I can do anything."

    "What you want?"

    "Who did you report to?"

"Different dudes. Not the same one every time."

"Give me a name. Just one. If it checks out I'll be back."

"Danny. Danny Powell I think. It was him a couple times."

"We don't have anything on him and he knows it." Kellen tried to explain.

"He was singled out by your C.I."

"Let's be honest here. We have a hophead trying to avoid jail time against a local hero. Even if Omar is telling the truth, which I am strongly doubting at this point, it's going to be impossible to pin anything on Powell."

Kellen hated to think that Danny could be involved. He had known Danny since he was a little kid. His sister, Kyra, babysat Danny when he was younger and Kellen had dated Danny's older sister Erin for a while in high school. Kellen also hated the fact that he couldn't prove anything either way.

“Cut him loose, but keep an eye on him.”

    “Will do captain.”

Kellen returned to the interview room.

“Dann...” He stopped himself. “Mr. Powell, you're free to go.”

“Thanks man.” Daniel replied, holding out his hand toward Kellen. Kellen shook his head and directed Daniel out the door.

Kellen returned to his desk and halfheartedly thumbed through the case file. He stared at the clock for several minutes. He let out a sigh and reached for his phone.
