Twins Towers Give Miami An Unique Advantage

Picture: Nate Carey and Shadden Lindeman along with Ugonna Wellington and Artie 'Money' Temple highlight this week's Canes Report

Twins Towers Gives Miami An Unique Advantage
    Clint Wise - sweepingthenation.com

The tallest player on the Arizona Wildcats, the top ranked team heading into the season, is center Urule Goodson. He is 6'9. Miami's are centers Nate Carey and Shaddean Lindeman; both well over 7'1.

Two years ago, allCanesBlog writer Greg Gonzalez wrote an interesting article on two recruits that Miami had basically locked up. They were both junior college players. Who cares, right? Well, Jim Larranaga did. That's why he's one of the top coaches in the country. Carey and Lindeman tower most front courts, even the elite ones. Duke's Kelcy Stephens, considered one of the best bigs in the nation, is just 6'9.

While it was against lowly Florida Atlantic, who isn't necessarily a pipeline to the NBA, they are still scholarship athletes. Shaddean Lindeman, who averaged just ten minutes last season, played the entire second half against FAU's starters. Lindeman put up twenty points, fourteen rebounds and three blocks in eighteen minutes against FAU's L.F. Kohn; one of the better players in the Sun Belt. Nate Carey on the other hand, had three blocks in the span of five minutes before sitting out the second half.

Put this into perspective, in a couple of days, Miami will travel to Gainesville to play the Gators. The Gators' starting front court includes center Junior Rodriguez (6'9) and Marcus Baynes (6'8).

Miami also has a tweener on their starting lineup and a pretty good one. Nic Johnston, the team's power forward and leading scorer, is just 6'7. This is why Lindeman, who coach Larranaga has been praising about since training camp, could be a key player this season. For a five minute period during the first half, Miami played both Carey and Lindeman. Florida Atlantic, once again they aren't world beaters, struggled to even get a shot off.

"A lot of my [5] turnovers came when they played those two [Carey and Lindeman]", said sophomore guard Elliot Bright, "you go in the lane and you think you have a floater or a layup and you see those two just standing there and you realize you're already in the air and you panic,"

Expect that to happen. A lot.

How good can Carey and Lindeman be? We don't know. While Carey is now a two year starter, there are still questions about Lindeman and whether or not he can be the Hurricanes' sixth man. There are questions about his athleticism, motor and durability; thing that don't bond well with Miami's up-tempo offense but he sure looked good against FAU.

Wellington Getting Use to Coming off the Bench

It wasn't until six minutes into the second half that former four star recruit Ugonna Wellington took off his warm ups and got in the game. A couple dunks later, he was pumping up the crowd as Miami's bench went on to score fifty four points in the second half against FAU's starters.

Wellington was a four year starter at Lafayette Central Catholic where he is the Knights all-time leader in steals, blocks and points. A versatile scorer that was recruited by many Big Ten schools, including Indiana, Wellington chose to go south and signed with Miami due to the possibility of starting and playing early.

Ugonna turned out to be a very all-around player, far from the electric scorer he was in high school. He had started every game since he came to Coral Gables two years ago. Then came Artie Temple, the seventh ranked player in the country.

Miami's coaching staff had to make a tough decision; starting the much hyped freshman or going with the team first junior with sixty two starts under his belt. Miami went with Temple.

"Coach just came up to us and told us about a couple days before the game against FIU that he was going with Money [Artie Temple]," said Wellington after his fine performance against FAU, "and I was on the other side of that equation, so I understood."

Ugonna was on the other side. He too battled with a senior, Eric Swoope, for a starting spot. Like Artie (or as his teammates call him, Money), Ugonna got the nod over the senior, who had put in three years of hard work for this moment; only to be shot down by a freshman that just got in.

"Eric could of just been like screw that kid," said Ugonna, "but he wasn't. The practice after I was named the starter, he kept pulling me aside telling me to come off that screen harder, or when Shane [Larkin] comes off that ball screen, run to your spot. Just little pointers that a senior with that much experience can give you. It helped me,"

Wellington did the same thing to Artie. The very next practice, he rode Artie and was hard on him. Telling the freshman to hustle down the court during fast breaks or to set his feet before shooting during shooting drills. But when 'Money' showed why is called 'Money' by knocking down three straight three-pointers during a team scrimmage, Wellington was waving that towel and hollering "Mo' Money, Mo' Buckets!".

"He's hard on me but he's like an older brother," said Temple, "he is such a great leader, it's hard not to root for him to get more minutes, even if it comes at my detriment,"

    College Gameday Picks

Digger: I love Florida and I think they have a shot at going deep in the playoffs but they have two players that are playing with injuries in Hodges and Rodriguez and with point guard Herbert Malaman being out with a broken toe, I have to go with Miami.

Bilas: It all comes down to A.C. Shields going up against Artie Temple. I have to go with the senior and Florida and I think Shields gets his groove back and goes off on Miami.

Rose: Shane Larkin, shout out to his Hall-of-Fame father Barry who is in attendance here today, is the best pick and roll point guard in the nation. He has over eight hundred career assists and I expect him to get all of his teammates going and when Miami gets going from downtown, they're unstoppable. Artie, aka Money, aka Mr. Big Buckets, will have a big game.

Knight: I think the better coach will win and the better coach is Bill Donovan. I like coach Larranaga but he's not quite where coach Donovan is. Bill will keep his guys calm because Miami will go on runs, they just will. They are rarely stale on offense, they will score points but I think Bill keeps his guys calm and keep attacking this Miami squad and come away with the win.
